University of Fort Hare (UFH)
Fort Hare's entry requirement is not one number. It is a set of conditions you have to satisfy all at once, and the Life Orientation one catches people who have been told everywhere else that it does not matter.
26 points, and that is the floor rather than the target
The minimum admission point score is 26 points or higher, depending on the programme. Faculties may set higher minimums with their own subject pass requirements.
For a Bachelor's degree, UFH requires all of the following:
- Achievement rating 4 (50–59%) or higher in English, Home Language or First Additional Language
- Achievement rating 4 or higher in four subjects
- Achievement rating 2 (30–39%) or higher in one subject
- Achievement rating 4 (50–59%) or higher in Life Orientation
Life Orientation is a hard condition here
This is the fourth institution on this site where Life Orientation can exclude you, after UKZN, SMU and Rhodes, and it is worth restating because the advice everywhere else is so consistently the opposite.
Fort Hare requires 50% or above in Life Orientation for Bachelor's entry. It sits in the list alongside the English requirement, not as a footnote. A learner with a strong APS and 45% in Life Orientation does not meet the requirement.
Read the subject conditions carefully
The combination is unusual and worth unpacking, because it is stricter than the national floor in one place and more forgiving in another.
Stricter: the national Bachelor's rule asks for 50% in four 20-credit subjects. Fort Hare asks for that and 50% in English specifically and 50% in Life Orientation. Those are two additional named subjects that the national rule does not require.
More forgiving: it explicitly allows one subject at 30–39%. So a single weak subject is accommodated by design rather than being fatal, provided the rest of the profile holds up.
See Bachelor's, Diploma or Higher Certificate pass? for how the national rule works underneath all of this.
Use the university's own calculator
UFH publishes an APS calculator on its website. Given that its requirements combine a points minimum with several named subject conditions, that is a more reliable check than any generic tool, including the one on this site.
Where UFH is
Fort Hare has campuses at Alice and East London in the Eastern Cape, and a site in Bhisho.
Alice is the historic campus, rural and residential, in the Eastern Cape countryside. East London is urban and coastal. They are about 130km apart and offer different programmes, so which one teaches your qualification is a decision about where you will live for three or four years, not an administrative detail.
Fort Hare's history is worth knowing if you are choosing between institutions. It is one of the oldest historically black universities in Africa and educated a significant proportion of the continent's post-independence political leadership. That heritage is a real part of the institution's identity.
Applying
- Apply directly to UFH. It is not part of the CAO.
- Check your Life Orientation is at 50% or above before anything else.
- Check your English is at 50% or above.
- Confirm which campus teaches your programme, Alice or East London.
- Residence and funding are separate applications.
Per-programme requirements above the 26-point minimum, application fees and closing dates are set per cycle and are not stated here. Confirm on the UFH site.
Who UFH genuinely suits
- Learners in the Eastern Cape wanting a traditional university with degree programmes across law, agriculture, education and the humanities.
- Students with one weak subject, given the explicit allowance for a single subject at 30–39%.
- Anyone who wants a residential campus experience, particularly at Alice.
- Applicants for agricultural sciences, where Fort Hare has long-standing strength.
What people get wrong when applying to UFH
Working from a baseline of 22
That figure was wrong on this site until August 2026. The published minimum is 26 or higher.
Ignoring Life Orientation
50% is required for Bachelor's entry. It is listed alongside English, not as an afterthought.
Meeting the points but missing English
50% in English is a separate named condition on top of the total.
Not checking Alice versus East London
Different programmes, 130km apart, and one is rural and one is coastal-urban.
