Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU)
SMU is not a general university with a medical faculty attached. It is a health sciences university, and that shapes everything about how it admits people, including the one place on this site where Life Orientation is genuinely load-bearing.
Life Orientation is not discarded here
Life Orientation is not simply discarded at SMU. It carries a minimum of its own.
Alongside the university's selection and admission rules, English must be at least a Level 4 and Life Orientation at least a Level 3.
So while most universities treat LO as irrelevant, at SMU a weak LO result can block you outright, regardless of your total. It is also one of the subjects used in pre-selection for Medicine.

The Medicine figure deserves a moment. An APS of 38 is a very high bar, and the phrase "pre-selected Grade 11 students" matters as much as the number: SMU pre-selects for Medicine on Grade 11 results. If you are in Grade 11 now and thinking about MBChB at SMU, your current year's marks are the ones that count for that process, not your matric finals.
Pre-selection is based on performance in English, Life Sciences, Physical Science, Mathematics and Life Orientation.
Per-subject minimum levels for each programme are published by SMU and are not reproduced here. They are specific, they differ by programme, and they are enforced.
Meeting the requirement is explicitly not enough
SMU states this itself, and it is worth quoting the substance: meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee admission, because the university receives more applications than it has spaces.
For health sciences programmes nationally this is the norm rather than the exception. The realistic reading is that the published minimum is a filter, and the actual competition sits well above it. If you are at exactly 25 for a Health Care Sciences programme, apply, but apply elsewhere as well, and have a second route planned.
Where SMU is
SMU is in Ga-Rankuwa, north-west of Pretoria in Gauteng, on a single campus alongside Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.
The hospital adjacency is the point of the place. Clinical training happens next door, which is a genuine advantage for health sciences students. It also means SMU is not a city-centre campus, so transport and accommodation need planning if you are not local.
Applying
- Apply directly to SMU through its online application system. It is not part of the CAO.
- If you are aiming at Medicine, understand the pre-selection timeline. Grade 11 results feed into it, so the relevant deadline arrives earlier than the general application cycle.
- Check your Life Orientation and English levels against the stated minimums before anything else. They are cheap to check and they are absolute.
- Residence and funding are separate from academic admission.

Who SMU genuinely suits
- Learners committed to a health sciences career: medicine, nursing, oral health, pharmacy, or the allied health professions.
- Students who want clinical exposure early, given the teaching hospital on site.
- Grade 11 learners planning ahead for Medicine, who can still act on the pre-selection timeline.
- Applicants with strong Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Mathematics results, since those drive selection here.
It suits you badly if you are undecided about your field. SMU's offering is narrow by design, and switching to an unrelated discipline generally means switching institution.
What people get wrong when applying to SMU
Assuming Life Orientation does not matter
At most universities it does not. Here it has a stated minimum of Level 3 and forms part of Medicine pre-selection. This is the single biggest difference between SMU and its neighbours.
Missing the Grade 11 pre-selection for Medicine
By the time matric results arrive, that process has already run. If MBChB at SMU is the goal, act in Grade 11.
Treating 25 as a likely offer
It is a minimum for consideration in a heavily oversubscribed field. SMU says outright that meeting requirements does not guarantee admission.
Applying without a Bachelor endorsement
The health sciences and nursing requirements specify an NSC endorsed for bachelor's degree study. No APS total substitutes for the endorsement.
