Sol Plaatje University (SPU)
SPU is the only university in the Northern Cape, which makes it the whole higher education picture for an entire province, and it is small enough that space, not points, is usually what decides.
Sourced programme minimums

SPU says the quiet part out loud
Worth quoting the substance, because SPU is unusually direct about it: satisfying the minimum admission requirements does not automatically mean you will be admitted. The final decision rests on your academic performance and the availability of space in the programme.
At a small university that second clause carries more weight than it does elsewhere. SPU opened in 2014 and remains one of the smallest institutions in the country. A programme with a modest intake fills quickly, and a learner comfortably above the published minimum can still miss out simply because there was no room.
The practical response is the same one that applies across this site, only more so here: apply early, and apply somewhere else as well.
A focused, deliberate offering
SPU's programme list is narrow by design rather than by accident, and the choices tell you something about what the university is for: education, data science, natural and applied sciences, heritage studies, economic and management sciences, and agricultural science.
Two of those are worth singling out. Data science is unusual as an undergraduate offering at a small institution and reflects a deliberate bet on where work is going. Heritage studies connects directly to Kimberley and the Northern Cape's history, which is a legitimate specialism rather than a filler subject.
If what you want is not on the list, that settles it. SPU does not have the breadth of an older comprehensive university, and it does not pretend to.
Where SPU is
SPU is in Kimberley, in the Northern Cape, across a small number of sites in the city.
The geography matters more here than almost anywhere else in the country. The Northern Cape is South Africa's largest province by area and its least populated, and SPU is its only university. For a learner in Upington, Springbok or De Aar, "the nearest university" and "SPU" are frequently the same sentence, and the alternative is relocating to another province entirely.
Worth knowing alongside it: VUT has a campus in Upington, so the Northern Cape is not quite a one-institution province if a university of technology suits you.
Who SPU genuinely suits
- Learners in the Northern Cape, for whom the alternative is usually leaving the province.
- Anyone going into teaching. Education is one of SPU's core faculties.
- Students interested in data science at undergraduate level.
- Applicants who would rather be at a small institution where they are known than a large one where they are not.
Applying
- Apply directly to SPU. It is not a CAO institution.
- Check the minimum for your specific programme. The range runs from 25 to 30 across the figures found.
- Apply early. At an institution this size, space fills before deadlines do.
- Apply elsewhere too, given SPU's own statement about space.
- Residence and funding are separate applications.
Application fees and closing dates are set per cycle and are not stated here. Confirm in SPU's current undergraduate prospectus.
What people get wrong when applying to SPU
Working from a baseline of 22
That figure was wrong on this site until August 2026. The lowest sourced minimum is 25, and the main degrees sit at 30.
Assuming a small university is an easy one
Education and Science both require 30, which is not a low bar anywhere.
Treating the minimum as sufficient
SPU states outright that meeting it does not mean admission, because space is limited.
Not checking the programme list first
SPU's offering is deliberately narrow. Confirm your field is there before planning around it.
