Vaal University of Technology (VUT)

Written by Mohapi · Last updated · How these figures are checked

VUT was missing from this site altogether until now, which is worth saying plainly: if you used the calculator before August 2026 and were looking for a Gauteng-area university of technology, an entire institution was simply not shown to you.

Correction, August 2026. VUT is a public university of technology and it was absent from MatricLink's directory entirely. Not listed with a wrong figure, just not there. It has been added. That is a coverage failure rather than an accuracy one, and arguably worse, because there was nothing on the page to check.

Life Orientation cannot help you at VUT

A maximum of six subjects count, excluding Life Orientation.

VUT is explicit that Life Orientation is excluded from all points calculations and from bonus points. So there is no route by which it helps you here.

Your maths determines your minimum

This is the pattern to understand at VUT. Rather than one figure per programme, there are usually two: a lower one if you took Mathematics, and a higher one if you took Mathematical Literacy.

From VUT's own published material, the shape looks like this:

Examples of VUT minimum APS requirements
SituationStated minimum APS
With Mathematics or Technical MathematicsFrom 20, depending on programme
With Mathematical LiteracyFrom 23, depending on programme
Some programmes, with Mathematics23
The same programmes, with Maths Literacy26
Three-year Engineering diplomas24 and above, plus level 4 in Mathematics, Physical Science and English

These are quoted because they appear in VUT's published documents, as examples of how the requirement is structured. They are not a complete list, and requirements are revised each cycle. Check the prospectus for the specific qualification you want.

The practical reading: Maths Literacy costs you roughly three points against the same programme. It is not a blanket exclusion at VUT, which is genuinely useful, but it does raise the bar.

Technical Mathematics counts

Worth flagging separately, because it is often overlooked. VUT treats Technical Mathematics alongside Mathematics for its lower minimum.

If you came through a technical high school and took Technical Mathematics and Technical Sciences, you are not pushed into the Maths Literacy band here. That is a meaningful advantage at a university of technology and it is not true everywhere.

What VUT is for

VUT is a university of technology: applied, occupational qualifications rather than research degrees. Its faculties cover engineering and technology, applied and computer sciences, management sciences and human sciences.

The engineering side is the historic strength, which fits its location in the Vaal Triangle, an industrial region. If you want to work in that sector, studying in it has real advantages for work-integrated learning and for the people you meet.

Where VUT is

The main campus is in Vanderbijlpark in the Vaal Triangle, southern Gauteng, with sites including Sebokeng, Upington in the Northern Cape, and Klerksdorp and Secunda.

The Upington campus is a long way from Vanderbijlpark and serves the Northern Cape, so if you are in that province VUT may be closer than you assume. Check which campus offers your programme before planning anything.

Applying

Application fees and closing dates are set per cycle and are not stated here. Confirm on the VUT site.

Who VUT genuinely suits

What people get wrong when applying to VUT

Not knowing VUT exists

It is one of the more overlooked public institutions, and this site contributed to that by leaving it out entirely.

Assuming Maths Literacy rules you out

It does not. It raises the required score by roughly three points on the same programme.

Treating Technical Mathematics as Maths Literacy

VUT accepts it alongside Mathematics for the lower minimum. Do not undersell it.

Expecting Life Orientation to help

Excluded from all points calculations and from bonus points.
