University of Mpumalanga (UMP)
UMP has one of the widest gaps on this site between what a diploma needs and what a degree needs. Six points separate them, and knowing which side you fall on changes what you should apply for.
Sourced programme minimums
| Qualification | Minimum APS and subject conditions |
|---|---|
| Diplomas | From 24 with Mathematics, or 25 with Mathematical Literacy |
| Bachelor's degrees | From 30, with English level 4, and Mathematics level 2 or Maths Literacy level 3 |
| Some Bachelor's degrees | 32, with English level 4, and Mathematics level 4 or Maths Literacy level 6 |
| Bachelor of Laws (LLB) | 33, with English level 4 |
Which maths you took moves the bar
UMP publishes paired requirements throughout, and the pattern is consistent: Mathematical Literacy is accepted, and it costs you.
- Diplomas: 24 with Mathematics, 25 with Maths Literacy.
- The higher degree band: Mathematics at level 4, or Maths Literacy at level 6, so a considerably stronger Maths Literacy result is required to stand in for a middling Mathematics one.
That second row is the more demanding trade. A level 6 in Maths Literacy is 70–79%; a level 4 in Mathematics is 50–59%. If you took Maths Literacy, check the specific programme rather than assuming the headline APS is the whole requirement.
The six-point gap, and what to do about it
A learner sitting on 26 or 27 at UMP is comfortably above the diploma entry point and clearly below the degree one. That is a common place to be, and it has a straightforward answer.
Apply for the diploma. A diploma at UMP is a real NQF Level 6 qualification, and completing one opens routes into degree study afterwards through articulation. Waiting a year to reapply for a degree with the same marks achieves less than starting.
See study options with a lower APS for how articulation actually works, and Bachelor's, Diploma or Higher Certificate pass? for the national pass rule sitting underneath all of this, a diploma needs a diploma endorsement regardless of your points.
Where UMP is
UMP has campuses in Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit) and Siyabuswa, in Mpumalanga.
It is one of the newest universities in the country, established in 2014, which shapes what it is: a smaller institution with a focused programme list rather than a comprehensive one. Agriculture, natural sciences, hospitality and tourism, ICT, education and development studies are where its offering sits.
Being new is worth weighing honestly. Smaller cohorts and newer facilities are genuine advantages. A shorter track record and a narrower programme range are genuine limitations. Neither is a reason on its own, but if the qualification you want is not offered, that settles it.
Who UMP genuinely suits
- Learners in Mpumalanga, where UMP is the only public university in the province.
- Applicants for agriculture, hospitality and tourism, which reflect the provincial economy and are well established here.
- Students whose score sits between the diploma and degree bands and who are willing to start on a diploma.
- Anyone who prefers a smaller institution to a large one.
Applying
- Apply directly to UMP. It is not a CAO institution.
- Check the requirement for the specific qualification, not a general UMP figure, the spread from 24 to 33 is wide.
- If you took Maths Literacy, read the paired requirement carefully.
- Confirm the campus, Mbombela or Siyabuswa.
- Residence and funding are separate applications.
Application fees and closing dates are set per cycle and are not stated here. Confirm on the UMP site.
What people get wrong when applying to UMP
Using one UMP number
24 for a diploma and 33 for Law are both UMP figures. There is no single baseline.
Assuming Maths Literacy costs one point
On the higher degree band it is level 6 Maths Literacy against level 4 Mathematics, a much bigger gap than the headline APS suggests.
Waiting a year rather than taking the diploma
If you are between the bands, a diploma starts now and articulates later.
Assuming the programme you want is offered
UMP is small and its programme list is focused. Check before you plan around it.
