Can I change my APS calculation after applying?
You can generally update your application once your final NSC results are released, since universities automatically re-run your APS with the official Department of Basic Education results. If your marks improve, some institutions let you request reconsideration for a more competitive programme. Contact the admissions office directly, since this isn't automatic everywhere.
What's the difference between a Diploma and a Degree?
A Diploma (NQF Level 6) is typically more practical and vocational, usually completed in 2–3 years at a University of Technology, and prepares you directly for a specific occupation. A Bachelor's Degree (NQF Level 7) is broader and more theoretical, usually takes 3–4 years, and is the standard entry qualification for postgraduate study. Diplomas can often be "topped up" with an extra year of study (a B.Tech or Advanced Diploma) to reach degree-equivalent standing.
Do universities check your matric certificate directly with the Department of Basic Education?
Yes. South African universities verify NSC results electronically against Umalusi and DBE databases before finalising registration, so results cannot be falsified. If there's a discrepancy between what you submitted and the official record, your registration will be placed on hold until it's resolved.
How is funding like NSFAS different from a university application?
Your university application (academic admission) and your funding application (NSFAS, bursaries, or student loans) are two completely separate processes and are usually submitted through different portals. Being accepted academically does not guarantee funding, and having funding approved does not guarantee an academic place. You generally need to apply for both, and as early as possible, since funding cycles often close before final matric results are out.
Can I still study if I failed one subject in matric?
It depends on which subject and your overall NSC pass requirements. If you meet the minimum requirements for a National Senior Certificate overall but underperformed in one subject, you may still qualify for a Higher Certificate or a Diploma with a lower subject threshold. Many learners in this position also choose to rewrite a single subject through the Second Chance Matric Programme to improve their APS and subject-specific eligibility.
